Metronidazole is used against acne, which arose not only due to anaerobic bacteria, but also which are of a mixed nature, that is, caused by aerobes and anaerobes, only in this case the gel preparation is prescribed along with antibiotics.

How to use metronidazole gel

Metronidazole gel is for external use only. It must be applied and carefully rubbed into the affected areas of the skin in the morning and evening. The face must be thoroughly cleansed before treatment. It is best to apply metronidazole gel only after you have washed your face and wiped the skin with an alcohol-based lotion. If necessary, this drug can be applied under a bandage.

Metronidazole tablets can be used to make a white clay acne mask. The gel cannot be a component of the mask! It should be applied to the skin in a very thin layer. In no case do not leave the medicine in gel form on the skin in large quantities for a long time.

Usually, the therapeutic effect can be seen already 1.5-2 weeks after the start of treatment, but in some cases a good result will be visible only after 5-9 weeks. If you use metronidazole acne gel in the warm season, then after applying it to the skin, try not to be in direct sunlight for a long time.

Several courses of treatment with this medicine can be carried out, but the interval between them should be at least 3 months. You can store such a gel for 2 years in a dry and protected from bright place, you can even in the refrigerator, but without freezing it.

Side effects of metronidazole gel

Considering the fact that Metronidazole is a facial gel with a very low blood concentration when applied topically, the risk of side effects from its use is very low. But still they can appear. The most likely ones are:

• severe itching;
• hives;
• rash and other allergic reactions;
• peeling;
• dry skin;
• hyperemia;
• tearing (usually occurs if the gel is applied very close to the eyes).

Contraindications to the use of metronidazole gel

Acne treatment with Metronidazole should not be carried out in the first trimester of pregnancy, as well as during breastfeeding, since it can harm the fetus and is excreted in breast milk. In the II and III trimesters of pregnancy, this drug can be used only after consultation with your doctor.

Also contraindications to the use of Metronidazole are:

• violations of coordination of movements;
• leukopenia (including history);
• hypersensitivity to substances that are derivatives of nitroimidazole;
• organic lesions of the central nervous system;
• liver failure;
• hypersensitivity to some components of the drug.

Do not use the gel with metronidazole tablets, which are intended for oral administration, especially if you are undergoing a second course of treatment.
